Art has been with us since the spark of humanity. Drawing is like going back in history, but with your own individual design, and when you do that you keep tradition and culture alive.
Art is also a stress reliever, allowing you to flood your entire imagination into a piece of paper or build a structure from your soul. Art is important during these stressful times because it can really help distract yourself from the world around you that feels like it’s on fire.
Ms. Hall teaches art at NRMS, and she talked to me about what students are doing in art classes and how the art program has adapted to this school year.

“In 6th grade Makerspace we are finishing up 3D printing, and moving on to stop animation. 7th Grade is working on digital art. They are recreating their favorite book cover using the app AutoDesk Sketchbook.
8th grade is finishing up photography and moving on to creating a master copy parody where they recreate a famous piece of art but add their own fun spin to it.
I think the biggest challenge art has faced this year is not having anyone be able to come to the art or makerspace room to create! There is a lot of materials that we can’t use because we are traveling to the students, and they require things like tiled floors and sinks. It’s also hard for remote kids because they may not have all the supplies they need to complete projects.”
Art is a really important class because it gives students the opportunity to break away from their academics and have a moment to get creative. There are certain forms of art that help people relax and help ease stress (like Zentangle) which can be very beneficial in an environment like we are currently in where everyone’s stress levels are high.
